Batts are the most familiar insulation material in America, but familiarity is not the same as best fit. Here are the honest pros and cons of each.

Batt insulation, fiberglass or mineral wool cut to fit standard framing spacing, is the material most homeowners picture when they hear the word insulation. It has been the default choice in American home construction for decades. Spray foam is a newer, higher-performing option in a lot of applications, but newer does not automatically mean better for every part of every home. This post lays out the honest pros and cons of each, side by side.

How batt insulation works

Batts are precut, friction-fit pieces of fiberglass or mineral wool sized to standard stud, joist, and rafter spacing. Installed correctly, a batt fills the cavity snugly from end to end and slows heat transfer through trapped air pockets within the fiber. It is a simple, well-understood product with a long track record.

Does not conform well to irregular cavities, angled framing, or spaces with a lot of obstructions
Can absorb and hold moisture if it gets wet, which reduces R-value and can take a long time to dry out in a low-airflow cavity
Lower R-value per inch than spray foam, which matters most in shallow cavities like a rim joist

How spray foam changes the equation

Spray foam is applied as a liquid that expands to fill the cavity and bonds directly to the surrounding framing, rather than being cut and fit into place. Because it expands into every gap rather than needing a precise, hand-fit installation, its real-world performance tends to track much closer to its rated R-value than a batt's does, particularly in cavities with a lot of wiring, plumbing, or irregular framing where a batt is hard to install without gaps.

Per manufacturer product data sheets, spray foam runs roughly R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch for open-cell foam and roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch for closed-cell foam, notably higher than a standard fiberglass batt, generally rated in the R-3.1 to R-3.4 per inch range, or a mineral wool batt, typically rated somewhat higher than standard fiberglass per inch depending on the specific product's density.

Why installation quality matters more for batts

A batt's rated R-value is measured under controlled laboratory conditions with a perfect fit. In practice, a batt with gaps around an outlet box, compressed against a wire run, or cut slightly short at the top plate delivers less than its rated performance, sometimes significantly less, in exactly that spot. Spray foam is far less sensitive to this kind of installation variability, since it expands to fill the space regardless of minor obstructions, which is part of why it tends to close the gap between rated and real-world performance more reliably.

Retrofits with a lot of wiring, plumbing, or obstructions already in the cavity: spray foam typically installs more completely than a batt around those obstacles
Whole-home or attic projects where air sealing is the priority, not just adding material: spray foam addresses both in one step
Some projects use both: a thin layer of closed-cell foam sprayed against the exterior sheathing, with the rest of the cavity filled by a batt, a hybrid approach sometimes used to combine foam's air sealing with a batt's lower material cost

Its real weaknesses show up in exactly the places spray foam tends to be recommended instead: shallow or irregular cavities, areas with a lot of obstructions, and any project where air sealing matters as much as R-value.
