Minnesota is hard on decks in ways warmer states never see. Footings that do not reach below frost depth heave a little more every winter until stairs pull away and rails rack out of square. Snow sits on a deck for months, so framing has to be sized for real load, not just summer parties. And the ledger, where the deck bolts to the house, is the single most important detail on the structure: attached and flashed right, it is solid for life; done wrong, it quietly rots the rim of your house.

These are exactly the details a general contractor sweats. Footings below frost depth, engineered spans, through-bolted ledgers with proper flashing, and code-compliant rails and stairs, inspected and documented.
