Why The Attic

Heat rises. So does your bill.

The attic is the single most important place to insulate in a Minnesota home. Warm air rises, and if the ceiling below your attic is not sealed and insulated well, that heat escapes straight through the roof all winter long. Your furnace runs harder, your bills climb, and the rooms below never quite feel warm.

Most older homes were built with far less attic insulation than our climate calls for, and what is there has often settled, shifted, or been disturbed over the years. Bringing the attic up to a proper air seal and R-value is usually the highest-return insulation upgrade a homeowner can make.

Air Sealing First

Seal the leaks, then insulate.

Insulation slows heat that moves through materials. It does very little to stop heat that rides out on moving air. In most attics, air is leaking up through gaps around light fixtures, plumbing stacks, the attic hatch, and the top plates of interior walls. Piling insulation on top of those leaks without sealing them first leaves a lot of performance on the table.

That is why we air-seal before we insulate. Spray foam is ideal for this work because it seals and insulates in the same pass, closing the gaps that batts and blown-in insulation simply lay over. Once the ceiling plane is sealed, the insulation above it can finally do its job.

Address knee walls and sloped ceilings in finished attics and story-and-a-half homes
R-Value & Ice Dams

The right R-value stops more than heat loss.

Minnesota's energy code calls for high attic R-values because our winters demand it, and a well-insulated attic is also your best defense against ice dams. Ice dams form when heat leaking into the attic warms the roof deck, melts the snow above it, and lets that meltwater refreeze at the cold eaves. The fix is not more roof heat cables. It is a sealed, well-insulated attic that keeps the roof deck cold and the heat inside your living space.

We build the attic to a proper air seal and R-value target for our zone, so you get lower bills and a roof that sheds snow the way it should. {{ATTIC_RVALUE_TARGET}}

How It Works

Our attic process.

STEP 01

Attic Inspection

We assess your current insulation, look for air leaks and ventilation issues, and check for signs of past moisture or ice dams.

STEP 02

Air Seal

We seal the ceiling plane at every penetration, top plate, and hatch so warm air stops leaking into the attic.

STEP 03

Insulate to Target

We add spray foam or top up insulation to a proper R-value for the Minnesota climate zone.

STEP 04

Verify & Clean Up

We confirm coverage, protect ventilation paths at the eaves, and leave the attic and the space below clean.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Common signs are high heating bills, rooms that feel cold no matter how high you set the thermostat, uneven temperatures between floors, and ice dams forming at the roof eaves in winter. If your home is more than a couple of decades old and the attic has not been touched, it is very likely under-insulated for our climate. We can inspect it and tell you where you stand.
