Cold floors start below the floor.

A cold, damp crawl space quietly works against the whole house above it. Air from the crawl space rises into your living space, so if it is cold and humid down there, your floors feel cold, your rooms feel drafty, and your furnace works overtime to keep up. Fiberglass batts stapled between the floor joists are the old approach, and in our climate they tend to sag, absorb moisture, and fall away over time.

The better approach for most Minnesota crawl spaces is to seal and insulate the perimeter walls rather than the floor above, turning the crawl space into a conditioned part of the building instead of a cold, wet cavity underneath it.

One material for insulation and moisture.

Closed-cell spray foam is the right tool for a crawl space because it does two jobs at once. It delivers a high R-value per inch, and because it is dense and water-resistant, it acts as its own air and vapor barrier. Applied to the crawl space walls and rim joist, it seals out the damp, humid air that leads to mold, wood rot, and musty smells, while insulating the space against the cold ground and outside air.

That combination is why closed-cell foam outperforms batts in this setting. It does not sag, it does not soak up ground moisture, and it stays put and stays effective for the long run.
