Why the smell happens in the first place

Spray polyurethane foam is created on site by mixing two liquid chemical components, an isocyanate and a polyol resin, that react and expand into foam within seconds of leaving the spray gun. That chemical reaction is what off-gassing refers to: the release of compounds into the air as the foam cures.

The smell is strongest right after spraying and fades as the foam finishes curing and the space is ventilated. It is a normal part of the process, not a sign that something went wrong. What matters is giving the foam and the space enough time before anyone without protective equipment goes back in.

It is worth saying plainly why this matters more for spray foam than for most other insulation materials. Batts and blown-in insulation are inert products straight out of the package, there is no on-site chemical reaction happening. Spray foam is different because it is manufactured in place, inside your home, which is also exactly what gives it the air-sealing performance that makes it worth choosing in the first place. The EPA is also direct about the limits of that guidance: re-entry time depends on the specific product's formulation, the size of the job, temperature and humidity, and how well the space is ventilated. The agency's own materials note that more research is needed on curing variability, and they consistently point homeowners back to the manufacturer's instructions for the exact product being used rather than a single universal number.

So how long should you actually plan to stay out?

For professional two-component spray foam, a realistic range is 24 to 72 hours before unprotected re-entry to the treated area, depending on the product, the size of the job, and ventilation. That range matters more for larger, whole-attic, or whole-crawl-space jobs than for a small rim joist touch-up, and it is longer than the 8 to 24 hours sometimes associated with small one-component canned foam, which is a different product entirely from the professional systems we install.
