What Is Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation?

Dense, rigid, and moisture resistant. Here is what closed-cell spray foam insulation actually is, how it performs, and where it makes the most sense in a Minnesota home.

The denser of the two spray foam types

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is the denser, more rigid of the two spray foam products, formed from the same two-component chemical reaction as open-cell foam but mixed to a different formulation. Where open-cell foam expands into a soft, flexible structure, closed-cell foam cures into a hard, dense material that feels almost like a rigid foam board once it sets.

The name describes its structure at a microscopic level. The tiny cells that make up the foam are closed off from one another rather than connected, which is what gives closed-cell foam its density, its strength, and its resistance to both air and moisture.

What that closed-cell structure actually does

Because the cells are sealed rather than open to each other, closed-cell foam does not allow air or water vapor to pass through it the way an open-cell or fibrous material does. That makes it both an air barrier and a vapor retarder in a single material, which is a meaningful combination in a cold, humid climate like Minnesota's.

It is also considerably denser than open-cell foam, which gives a wall or cavity sprayed with closed-cell foam noticeably more rigidity and structural stiffness than one filled with a lighter material. That added stiffness is a secondary benefit in most residential applications, the air sealing and moisture control are usually the deciding factors, but it is a real property worth knowing about when comparing the two products.

R-value: why closed-cell foam performs well in tight spaces

Manufacturer data sheets commonly publish closed-cell spray foam at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch, close to double the per-inch R-value of open-cell foam. That higher R-value per inch is a big reason closed-cell foam gets specified in shallow cavities, a rim joist bay or a 2x4 wall, where there is limited room to build up insulation thickness.

A standard 2x4 wall cavity, roughly 3.5 inches deep, sprayed full with closed-cell foam lands somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties for total R-value, using that per-inch range. That is a meaningful number on its own, and it is one reason closed-cell foam sometimes gets paired with an additional layer of insulation on the interior side to work toward ENERGY STAR's recommended R-38 to R-49 range for wall cavities in Minnesota's colder climate zones.

Why closed-cell is the standard choice for rim joists and basements

The rim joist, the band of framing where a home's wood structure meets its foundation, is a common spot for closed-cell foam specifically because it needs to do two jobs at once: stop the air leaking through dozens of individual cavities around the foundation perimeter, and stop warm, moist indoor air from reaching the cold wood and concrete behind it, where it would otherwise condense.

Old fiberglass batts tucked into rim joist cavities do neither job well. Closed-cell foam bonds directly to the framing and concrete, closes the air leak, and acts as a vapor retarder in the same application, which is why it is considered the standard fix for this part of a Minnesota home.

Where closed-cell spray foam is typically used

Rim joists and band joists, where air sealing and moisture control both matter
Basement walls, especially where moisture resistance is a priority
Exterior walls below grade or in flood-prone areas
Roof decks and cathedral ceilings where a vapor retarder is part of the design
Any shallow cavity where a higher R-value per inch is needed to hit a proper target

The moisture question, and why it matters here

The EPA's guide to mold and moisture recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent, to reduce the conditions mold needs to grow. In spots like a rim joist or a basement wall, where warm indoor air is constantly meeting a cold surface, closed-cell foam's vapor retarding property is doing real work toward that goal, not just adding R-value.

That is a large part of why closed-cell foam shows up so often in discussions of moisture and mold in Minnesota homes. Blocking the air movement that carries moisture to a cold surface is usually a more durable fix than trying to manage the moisture after it has already condensed.

This is also why closed-cell foam is a common recommendation for basements and crawl spaces that have had a musty smell or visible dampness in the past, once any existing moisture issue has been properly addressed. It closes off the specific condition, warm indoor air reaching a cold surface, that let the problem develop in the first place.

Where closed-cell is not the right call

Closed-cell foam is not automatically the better choice everywhere in a home. It costs more per board foot than open-cell foam, and its vapor-retarding property is not always what a given wall or roof assembly needs, some designs actually call for a vapor-permeable material instead. A spray foam insulation contractor should be looking at the whole assembly, not defaulting to the denser, more expensive product out of habit. Cost is a real factor too. Because closed-cell foam expands less per unit of liquid material than open-cell foam, filling the same cavity generally costs more. In a large, deep cavity where a vapor retarder is not needed, that added cost may not buy a homeowner anything beyond what open-cell foam would already deliver.
