A pole barn is a post-frame building with steel panels over open framing, and that construction creates two problems in our climate. Steel conducts cold straight through, and warm, moist air inside condenses on the cold underside of the panels, dripping onto everything below. An uninsulated pole barn is cold, damp, and hard to heat, which is exactly what you do not want in a shop, storage building, or livestock space.
Spray foam solves both problems at once. It insulates the steel so the building holds heat, and it air-seals and controls the moisture that causes the condensation and dripping. That is what turns a bare metal shell into a space you can actually work in, store equipment in, or heat through the winter.
Closed-cell foam is built for post-frame steel.
Sprayed directly to the underside of the steel panels and into the framing, closed-cell spray foam bonds to the metal and cures into a rigid, air-tight, moisture-resistant layer. It stops the condensation at its source by keeping warm interior air off the cold steel, and it delivers a high R-value in the shallow depth a post-frame wall gives you.
It also does not sag, settle, or trap water the way batts and fiberglass rolls do in a metal building. Once it cures, it stays put and keeps performing, which is what a working ag or shop building needs. Where budget or the assembly calls for it, open-cell foam can be used in roofs and walls that are not condensation-critical, and we spec the right foam for each area.
